Rule Sets

High School: National Federation Rules. Some tournaments will have reductions in playing time, halftime and timeouts.

Men's City League: National Federation, with the following exceptions:

  • 20 min. halves, 5 min. overtime
  • 5 timeouts per game
  • May dunk a dead ball
  • All throw-ins to sideline
  • No handling backcourt violations
  • Player control ends on release
  • Player disqualification on 6th foul or 2nd technical
  • Free throw plane restrictions for non-shooters end on release
    • Q.E. Fun League: Same as City League, with the following exceptions:
  • 2 x 20 min. running time halves, last 3 minutes of half stop time, 5 minute halftime
  • 3 minute overtime stop time
  • 2 timeouts per half, non-cumulative
  • Player disqualification on 5th foul
    • Ontario Basketball Association: National Federation, with a few minor modifications. Basketball Ontario does not expect the Officials to enforce these modifications but to be aware of and understand them. 
    1)   Atom to Premier
     FIBA uniform numbers are legal at all Basketball Ontario sanctioned events.
     The numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 are permitted.

2)   Atom
     a)   Zone defense is NOT permitted
     b)   Drop Back Rule - Once a team leads by more than fifteen (15) points
          they are not permitted to press
     c)   Double teaming and ONLY man-to-man pressing are permitted
     d)   Equal Participation - Eight (8) three (3) minute periods

3)   Minor Bantam
     a)   Zone defense is NOT permitted
     b)   Drop Back Rule - Once a team leads by more than fifteen (15) points
          they are not permitted to press.
     c)   Double teaming and ONLY man-to-man pressing are permitted
     d)   Equal Participation - Six (6) four (4) minute periods and one (1) eight
          (8) minute period

4)   Bantam
     a)   Drop Back Rule - Once a team leads by more than twenty (20) points
          they are not permitted to press.
